Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)Frequently asked questions about probiotics and Pearls™ branded products. How do I know if I need probiotics?
Is eating yogurt the same as taking a probiotic supplement?Yogurt is an excellent source of probiotics, but it’s not for everyone. Some people can’t tolerate dairy, and others simply don’t enjoy the taste. Plus, there are questions about the actual probiotic count found in yogurt products. The National Yogurt Association (NYA) has established criteria for products that carry the “Live & Active Culture” seal. While the probiotic count is set at the time of manufacture, this “time” has not been well defined (i.e., before or after fermentation?, before or after packaging?). Either process may require high temperatures that potentially damage the fragile probiotic bacteria. A probiotic supplement such as Pearls offer the goodness of yogurt without the fat, sugar or calories. Plus, Acidophilus Pearls arrive right where they're needed because they are able to survive in stomach acid due to their triple layer, True Delivery™ Technology. What is True Delivery™ Technology, and why does it matter?True Delivery™ Technology protects the microflora from stomach acids and releases them undamaged intact in the intestine.† It’s a pretty amazing feat—after all, your stomach contains gastric acid levels that are roughly a million times more acid than water! Other products in standard gelatin capsules don’t stand a chance against stomach acid. With these products the healthy active cultures you want are killed in the stomach, never making it to your intestines. The probiotics in Pearls™ supplements survive these harsh conditions and deliver the healthy flora where you need it.† Why do some probiotics need to be refrigerated?Even on the shelf or at home, some probiotic supplements are affected greatly by heat, air, and light, and need to be refrigerated to remain viable. This lack of stability affects the microflora, which means you could be getting less of everything--less active and less healthy bacteria, and of course, fewer benefits. Each member of the Pearls™ family of probiotic supplements are shelf stable and the unique capsule protects the microflora. Are the probiotics you include in the formulas readily used by the body?Yes, they are indigenous to the human gastrointestinal tract, and as such, they more readily adapt to and colonize the gastrointestinal tract.† Where does the bacteria in Pearls come from? The strains in each Pearls
product are harvested via a highly controlled fermentation process,
then purified, grown to large numbers, and concentrated to high
doses. How do the bacteria live in the capsules? Is there any food for them inside? The bacteria are in a state of suspended animation. They are dry enough that all biological processes are in a resting state. Once consumed, they rehydrate and biological processes including growth and reproduction resume. So a food source in the capsule is not necessary.
